* Women in forestry

The organization Women in Forestry was founded in May 15, 2004. The background for this initiative is as follows:

Women are private forest owners, entrepreneurs, researchers, foresters, forestry officers and students. The role of women and their problems of forest management in forestry are not analyzed jet. The strengthening collaboration between women forest owners, entrepreneurs, researchers, foresters, forestry officers and students will create the basis for stimulation their activities and solving their problems.

According to the Forest Act of the Lithuanian Republic, forests are divided into state and private. The structure of forest ownership has changed due to an ongoing land reform process since Lithuania regained independence. The private forest sector constitutes 202.0 thousand private forest owners and 630,000 hectares of private forest. This is 30% of total forest area a figure that is projected to increase to 40-47% in the future. Average size of private forest holding is 4.5 hectares. 30,7% of forest owners are more than 70 years old. More then half of private forest owners are women (52.2%). The role of women as private forest owners and their impact to management of forest holding are not clear.

Objective: to strengthen the role of women in forestry sector.
