*Finnish forest owners invest in forest management

Private forest owners in Finland annually invest a total of more than 100 million euro in forest management.

Forest owners spend this money for renewing almost 100 000 hectares of forest, for managing their young forest stands on 150 000 hectares, for building forest roads, for improving their already ditched forest areas and for other forest management measures. The forest re-growth period is in average 80 years in Southern Finland and somewhat over 100 years in Northern Finland.

Forest management work is annually carried out in about half of Finnish privately owned forests. The number of privately owned farms with forest land in Finland is about 300 000.

Voluntary protection
Forest owners voluntarily invest almost 60 million euro in nature conservation by leaving areas untouched and trees standing for the purpose of securing a habitat for living organisms when logging and forest management work is carried out. Furthermore, forest owners' willingness to take conservation measures is tested in the METSO Forest Biodiversity Programme, where the central government authorities test new methods for forest conservation.
