More and more institutions worldwide acknowledge PEFC as an important means of sustainability and discard their former "FSC only" policy.

One example of this development is the 2005 Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) that was developed by Yale and Columbia University and made the news headlines last week (see Appendix A, page 72 and 73 and Appendix C, page 292 of ESI).  Although many factors and variables determine the overall rating, it isinteresting to note that e.g. northern European countries with a high percentage of PEFC certified forests get a very high country rating in thereport.
